This is the 2023 Silver Britannia, featuring Queen Elizabeth’s effigy in nearly perfect MS69 certified by NGC.  Queen Elizabeth passed on September 8, 2022 with most numismatists thinking the Royal Mint would change to producing 2023 Silver Britannia’s with King Charles III’s effigy.  Surprisingly, the Royal Mint had already started 2023 production with Queen Elizabeth’s effigy and chose not to melt them down.  They quietly released the few 2023 coins to the public.  This is one of those rare coins.  It is guaranteed certified by NGC as MS69, nearly perfect and comes in a protective acrylic holder with unique Queen Elizabeth Label.

Obverse features of the 2022 British Silver Britannia Coin include a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a 2015 design from Jody Clark that serves as the fifth-generation effigy of the Queen from the Royal Mint. The design includes the George IV State Diadem Crown and is set against a guilloche background field.

Reverse designs on the 2022 1 oz Silver Britannia Coin offer Philip Nathan’s depiction of Britannia. Created in 1987 for the debut of the gold series, the image shows Britannia standing along the coast with the Union Jack shield and an olive branch in her left hand, as well as the trident in her right hand.

The Royal Mint has been making coins for more than 1,100 years and the 2022 Silver Britannia will likely be the final year to feature Queen Elizabeth II.  Britannia, the symbol of Britain, continues the Royal Mint’s drive to have the very best in design and security.  Silver Britannia’s have been struck by the Royal Mint since 1997.

The British Britannia Series debuted at the Royal Mint in 1987. The first coins offered in the series were the Gold Britannia’s. The series originally included 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. In 1997, these silver Britannia coins were issued for the first time. The Silver Britannia is now available each year in 1 oz silver, as well as 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 5 oz options.

In 2021, the Royal Mint enhanced the security of its gold and silver bullion coins in this series with the addition of four security elements on the reverse field. These include engraving a surface animation feature in the background field of the reverse and a latent security feature that changes between a trident and a padlock when the viewing angle changes. Other security elements include micro text around the central design element and tincture lines on the Union Jack shield.
