The first us cent was produced in 1787. The colloquial term penny comes from the British
coin of the same name. The current US cent
coin with profile of President Abraham Lincoln has been made since 1909 to
celebrate the centennial of his birth.
The reverse of these first Lincoln cents featured two wheat
heads in memorial style. After 50 years,
in 1959 the reverse design was changed to the Lincoln Memorial design. In 2009, to celebrate the Bicentennial of
Lincoln’s birth the US Mint made four different reverse designs. They included the Birth and early childhood
design, the Formative years design, the Professional life design, and the
Presidency design. At the conclusion of
these designs in 2010 a new reverse was begun the Union Shield design. This final mint state coin has the Union Shield
design on the reverse.
